Quotes for Contemplation

The ‘Quotes for Contemplation’ series is an invitation to become still and turn inward, allowing deep inner associations and insights to rise to the surface. The more you allow yourself to explore, turn meanings on their head, take less travelled paths down rabbit holes and back again, the more inspirational depth and value these excursions into the realm of intuitive listening will yield to you.

There are truly no ‘wrong turns’ to take, for every trail will present its own versions of insights and realizations; you can always retrace your steps back to more helpful ground, take different turns or head way out into unchartered wilderness on your own adventures towards your personal Truth - no avenue taken need ever turn into a dead-end of absolute and concrete conclusion…

The quotes chosen are some of my favorite perennial classics, well known to most of us.

On my search for more transparency, however, I have found that not all of these quotes are always attributed to the correct source. I have done my best to make a note where I have found discrepancies, and to name the correct source if I was able to trace it. For anything I may have missed or misrepresented, I apologize.

Any interpretations of these famous quotes offered in this series are my own, and I invite you to take them as starting points for your own contemplations only, never as the only or correct meaning intended by their original authors.

Most of all, I hope you will get much joy, inner peace and a host of startlingly fresh insights of your own on this journey of contemplation.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.
— Oscar Wilde

Do you occasionally or perhaps even frequently find yourself stuck in the purgatory-pain of comparison?

Trying to gauge from the reaction of others how to fit in, how to stand out, or how to blend with and live up to the prevalent consensus of what is generally accepted as ‘success’?

Are you familiar with the frustrating sense of paralysis or over-compensation that typically accompanies the above?

What and whom are you sacrificing by trying to be like everybody else, or like those you consider enviable and admirable?

Have you ever taken the time and courage to look within, to consider who is waiting inside of you, waiting to be released from conditioned thoughts, behaviors and judgments, waiting to be free to ‘just be’, according to their own innate nature and propensities?

And what about your own unique strengths and talents? Your personal history and trajectory through life? How often do you acknowledge and appreciate what your perspective and your gifts bring to the world that no-one else could offer in just the same way that you can?

Go ahead - let yourself be inspired and encouraged by the amazing feats and deeds of those you genuinely admire and appreciate. This resonance you feel every time you think of them tells you one thing: whatever it is you covet or praise in another is a value you carry within yourself!

It may be latent, buried beneath a humungous dung-heap of self-doubt and unworthiness, but it is there, or else it would not be plucked into a vibrating reverberation deep within you whenever you encounter an echo of it outside of yourself.

Once uncovered, it may not even remotely resemble what you see sparkling and shining in others. And yet, it is your very own jewel; it is up to you to buff and polish it and make it radiate according to its own unique and inherent qualities.

If you still have trouble knowing yourself and loving yourself for everything you are and contribute, it can indeed be valuable to become aware of attributes, actions, qualities and strengths you strongly value and admire in others.

Then, look at how you are showing up to your own life - how much and how well do you, yourself, embody those qualities?

Spend some time there, with sincere honesty, acceptance and humility.

Now look again. How much genuine joy do you experience from the way you live your life? What do you think would bring you more joy, more tranquility and aliveness? What kind of life would your ideal self live and create?

Let yourself be inspired and ignited by the successes and accomplishments, the contributions and talents of others; then find your own honest path forward in a way that is unique and ultimately fulfilling to you, regardless of anyone else’s opinions or preferences.

Be wholly yourself; being anyone other than you would just not suffice!
