10.What Are Your Greatest Energy Drains?

Living a fulfilling, authentic life has a lot to do with good balance and the ability to prioritize. Much too often, hours, days and weeks seem to tracelessly vanish down the drain of the daily grind, never to be recovered and seen again. Our energy resources, too, are finite and frequently squandered on the least fulfilling of tasks, thoughts and goals.

If something is draining our energy, chances are that at least some aspect of it is inauthentic to us. Identifying our energy drains and energy chargers takes us a long stride towards arranging our lives in increasingly satisfying, joyful and vitalizing ways, potentially freeing up time and energy for more creative and authentic pursuits and expressions.

Daily responsibilities will still need to be addressed and taken care of, certainly, but when we prioritize how we feel and what energizes and excites us, chores may take a fraction of the time they used to, and the joy and vitality we perhaps used to lose to the mundanity of life is restored and amplified when we follow a more aligned focus of passion and excitement.

Journal Prompts:

  • make a list of all the things you do in your daily life that drain your joy and energy.

  • make a list of the repetitive, looping thoughts and interactions that drain and worry you.

  • what can you do to minimize or eradicate these drains? If it is your own thoughts and beliefs that lower your energy, it’s within your power to change it! If it’s external circumstances, you may or may not be able to shift it much…but if you can learn to let go of your resistance to it, your beliefs around it, you may find that it becomes easier to not give your power and energy away to what’s going on in your life and learn to stay more centered in your inner core of peacefulness. It takes practice and commitment and a willingness to take responsibility for the way you feel and act, but it is absolutely possible to do so.

  • what can you bring into your life to balance out the drains you cannot (yet) eliminate?

  • make a list of all the activities, thoughts, dreams and visions that energize, motivate and excite you. What are you passionate about? What lights you up? This is your authentic voice speaking to you - how can you listen to it and start making more time and space for your passion pursuits? Don’t take any excuses!!! Break it down into tiny steps if you need to, but do make it a priority to make yourself come alive!
