Heeding The Voice of Authenticity, VIII

Fears & Comfort Zones

Welcome back to this 12-part series of Journal Prompts to help you hear your Authentic Inner Voice and find your Calling and Purpose. If you have missed the introduction in Part I, you can find and read it here.

8. What Are You Afraid Of?

Our fears may give us clues as to what we are hiding from. Just as with our pain-points and struggles, often our ‘mission’, our authentic expression in the world, can hide on the other side of our fears and resistances. Typically, there will be some form of attraction to the thing we fear or avoid, though it may be difficult to admit to it. A classic example - stage fright. We may be terrified of standing up in front of groups of people, may even believe that we would be quite happy working behind the scenes as the invisible helper. And yet, deep down, we may actually yearn for the attention and perhaps even acclaim…

Note to my inner discernment: I may have a fear of heights and be terrified by the idea of sky-diving or bungee-jumping, but if I do not really feel any genuine draw to it, nor any strong admiration for or attraction to the people who do such ‘dangerous’ things way out of my personal comfort zones, it is not likely that things like rock-climbing, sky diving etc are necessarily part of my personal purpose or authentic self-expression in this lifetime. Although it could certainly point me towards ways in which I hold back my more adventurous, daring nature…especially if I do tend to admire those that dare go where my fears bid me not to… If I find I have a strong appreciation for feats such as famous expeditions of Mount Everest, for example, perhaps it’s my invitation to look closer at which literal or metaphorical frontiers are calling to me to be conquered and explored…

Journal Prompts:

  • make a list of the things you find you have a resistance to, yet also, deep down, find yourself drawn to or attracted to in others (e.g. public speaking, stage fright, deeply intimate love connections…)

  • take stock of your comfort zones - how and in which areas are you holding yourself back because of complacency, habit or fears?

  • what are your worst fears? What is the worst thing that could happen to you if you dared to follow your dreams and leave your comfort zones? Is it worse than staying stuck where you are?

Join me in the following Posts in this 12- step series, where we will continue unveiling the layers to reveal the beautiful, unique expression of our most Authentic Self…
